Is Turkey Really Better for Hair Transplants?
Let’s talk about the allure… and what they aren’t telling you in the brochure

In Search of a Bargain
People are flocking to Turkey looking for bargain hair transplants. nt. Americans, Brits, Canadians… Many men considering hair transplants in Turkey are taken in by the stellar reviews and promising testimonials, but most of all the cheaper cost.
In fact, alluring prices is the main reason anyone goes abroad for elective surgery, cosmetic or otherwise.
I get it. Everyone has a budget. I even discussed that reality in a recent reaction video on Hair Transplants in Turkey.
However, yet again, I feel the enthusiasm for surgery abroad is at odds with the reality. When you start factoring in travel costs and unforeseen complications (which I’ve been asked to fix) …what started as a perceived bargain can turn into anything but.
‘Cheap hair transplants abroad can turn into a very costly ordeal.’
And it’s not being talked about nearly enough.

Word of Mouth and Glowing Reviews
Over the past decade, Turkey has become a hair transplant and plastic surgery mecca. Enthusiastic online testimonials and glowing video reviews make for great advertising. If you were considering a surgery and a friend was happy with their results, it would make sense that you’d want to consult with their surgeon. The same goes for favorite influencers. But the volume, reviews, and price lend a credibility that isn’t always deserved or accurate. You arrive, get your hairline design, head into surgery… not a lot of time for consultations and contemplation.
There are some great, well-respected, and well-trained surgeons in Turkey. Many are not. Regulation for cosmetic surgery in Turkey (and South Korea) is different than here in the United States.. If you don’t speak the language and are not familiar with how regulation and healthcare work in another country, it can be hard to navigate, especially if (or when) things go wrong. There are stories every year of complications that happen overseas. While some are due to bad luck, not a bad surgeon, what all the stories have in common is that they’re infinitely harder to manage when you are away from home.
And what if the grafts don’t take? That’s a distinct possibility with hair transplant mega sessions (3000 plus grafts in one sitting), which are popular in Turkey. Follow-up and support can be tricky without additional travel, and revision work may be costly or impossible. Once donor hairs have been harvested for implantation, that’s it. They’re gone.
And then there’s the sheer volume. Some Turkish clinics are performing a lot of hair transplants in a day. The technicians are doing surgery, not the surgeons. In contrast, I perform one hair transplant surgery a day. Of course, I have a team assisting me, but I’m the one in the room supervising and doing the surgery.
There’s the critical difference. You need a responsible surgeon present (not a technician) who is trained to recognize medical problems immediately and treat them. There have been two hair transplant deaths in the past 6 months in Turkey. The most likely cause is lidocaine toxicity, but without transparency, it’s impossible to know. Sometimes, governments decide not to disclose cosmetic surgery complications because they’re trying to protect an emerging industry.
The Heart Wants…
Another reason I see people heading to Turkey is that they ‘want what they want’ and won’t take no for an answer. This comes in two flavors at the moment: low hairline design and desire to forego medical hair loss therapy.
In general, I’m not a fan of very low hairline designs. Of course, there are always exceptions, but for most people, they’re just not realistic and don’t look natural. The bigger concern is that they may not age well as the rest of the hair matures. When I’m designing a hairline for a patient, I’m not just determining how low to go. I’m balancing what the patient envisions, what will give a great, natural looking result, and how to best preserve grafts for later on down the road.

Patients who want to forgo medical hair loss therapy sometimes pursue a hair transplant in Turkey. While no one needs to be on medical hair loss therapy (bald is beautiful, too!), I much prefer working with a patient willing to get their hair loss stabilized before we proceed with a hair transplant. Medical therapy is a huge part of that because it helps prevent further hair loss and improves the density you still have. Longevity of results, quality of grafts, patient satisfaction — medical hair loss therapy is a win-win. Going to Turkey because you don’t want your hair surgeon to discuss preventing future hair loss is a bad call.
My Difference: Natural, Conservative, Optimized.
Whenever I’m working on a hairline design and planning out a surgery, my goal is always natural, conservative, and optimized for longevity.
I want your hair transplant to look amazing, and a big part of that is the artistry that goes into a hairline design. There are technical considerations too: punch size, graft numbers, hair curl, calibre, and texture. I also really want to preserve your donor area. Taking too many grafts from the DHT resistant donor area can lead to obvious scarring as well as make future revisions impossible.
Great surgeons often tell their patients in consultation that ‘we can always go back’. That’s because taking or doing too much (either in a lip lift or hair transplant) is a recipe for disaster.

If a patient wants more density after a transplant? We can always go back in a year and reevaluate because the donor area wasn’t overharvested. That’s huge.
Each hair transplant case is different and needs to be personalized, not fed through a production line. What’s going to look best over the long term will be individual and is worth getting an expert who doesn’t just consider what will look good one year from now, but decades into the future.
That’s delivering confidence.
Speaking of confidence, my Feel Confident Haircare line, while never a replacement for hair loss medication, is formulated with real ingredients that are proven to support hair follicle health and growth.
