PRP vs Exosome Therapy for Hair Loss
Advances in regenerative medicine have opened a host of new, non-surgical options to help restore thinning hair. Two of the most talked-about hair restoration treatments today are Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy and Exosome therapy. While both aim to stimulate hair growth, they work in different ways and are suited to different patients and cases.

What Is PRP Therapy?
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy uses your body’s own healing properties to stimulate hair follicles. A small sample of your blood is drawn and processed to concentrate platelets— specialized cell fragments rich in growth factors PDGF and VEGF. This concentrated plasma is then applied topically alongside microneedling in areas of the scalp where hair is thinning.
PRP can help:
- Stimulate dormant hair follicles
- Improve blood supply to the scalp
- Strengthen existing hair
PRP is a well-established treatment with a strong safety profile as it uses your own biological material.
What Is Exosome Therapy?
Exosome therapy is a newer, advanced regenerative treatment that uses the signaling properties of stem cells to stimulate hair growth. Exosomes are tiny vesicles that carry growth factors, proteins, and genetic material that help cells communicate and regenerate.
When applied to the scalp alongside microneedling, they can:
- Promote follicle regeneration
- Reduce inflammation
- Support stronger, thicker hair growth
Unlike PRP, exosomes are not derived from your own blood, but from carefully processed and purified sources.
Key Differences Between PRP and Exosomes
While both treatments aim to improve hair growth, they differ in several important ways:
- Source: PRP comes from your own blood, while exosomes are externally sourced regenerative products.
- Potency: Exosomes contain a higher concentration of signaling molecules, which may lead to more pronounced effects.
- Consistency: PRP is more established with established and standardized protocols. Exosomes are newer and can vary between suppliers.
- Treatment Experience: PRP requires a blood draw; exosome therapy does not.
PRP uses your very own growth factors to stimulate hair follicles, while exosomes harness the power of stem cells signaling. PRP requires a blood draw whereas exosomes come prepackaged.
Which Treatment Is Right for You?
The best option depends on your individual goals, stage of hair loss, and overall health.
PRP may be ideal if:
- You prefer a natural, autologous treatment
- You are in the early stages of hair thinning
- You want a well-established option with minimal risk
Exosome therapy may be better suited if:
- You are looking for a more advanced regenerative approach
- You have more significant hair thinning
- You want potentially faster or more noticeable results
In general, we recommend starting with PRP and — if you’re happy with the results but still want to see more growth — then giving exosomes a try. Neither is ‘better’ and both have their uses.
What to Expect?
Both treatments are minimally invasive and performed in-office. Most patients experience little downtime and can return to normal activities the same day. A series of 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart are necessary to see results, with maintenance recommended every 6-12 months.
Visible results typically develop gradually over several months, with improvements in hair thickness, density, and overall scalp health.
